Cutting Non-Revenue Water from 40% to 15% with Accurate Meters
The Problem Nobody Can Afford to Ignore
In Kenya, Jordan, Serbia, Egypt, and dozens of other countries, water utilities produce enough water, but 30% to 50% of it disappears before anyone pays for it. Leaks, illegal connections, ageing meters, unbilled consumption. The technical term is non-revenue water (NRW), and it costs billions globally every year.
District Metered Areas: Proven, Practical, Cost-Effective
The most effective approach is simple in principle: divide the network into zones, measure what goes in, compare it to what gets billed. The difference is your loss. An electromagnetic flow meter at each zone boundary gives you the data you need to find and fix the leaks.
Why electromagnetic? Because mechanical meters clog with sediment, lose accuracy over time, and create pressure drop. A mag meter has a smooth, unobstructed bore: nothing to wear out, nothing to block.
Accuracy That Actually Matters
A DMA with 5,000 m³/day inflow: a ±2% meter gives you ±100 m³/day error. That's 36,500 m³/year of pure guesswork. Our NT-VMF delivers ±0.2% accuracy (±0.27% calibration uncertainty), so your error band drops to ±10 m³/day. Now your night-flow analysis actually tells you something useful.
Installation Tips
- 5×DN straight pipe upstream, 3×DN downstream
- Full-bore: never reduce diameter at the meter
- Grounding rings on plastic pipes
- Enable empty-pipe detection
- Set low-flow cut-off for clean night-flow data
The Payback
A utility that drops NRW from 40% to 25% on a 100,000 m³/day network recovers 15,000 m³/day. At typical tariffs, the DMA metering programme pays for itself in 12–18 months.
