Battery-Powered Flow Meters for Off-Grid Water Networks in Africa & Central Asia
The Off-Grid Challenge
Across rural Sub-Saharan Africa, parts of Central Asia, and remote regions of the Middle East, water infrastructure exists without reliable electricity. Meter chambers are kilometres from the nearest power line. Solar panels get stolen. Generators run out of fuel.
A conventional electromagnetic flow meter draws 15–25 watts continuously. That's fine in a pump station with mains power. But for a remote DMA boundary or a rural borehole, you need something different.
NT-VMF-BT: 5-Year Battery Life
Our battery-powered variant uses a low-power excitation circuit that measures at programmable intervals (every 5 seconds, every 15 seconds, or every minute depending on your accuracy/battery trade-off). The result: up to 5 years of operation from a single lithium battery pack.
- Measurement interval: 1s to 60s, configurable
- Data logging: 500,000+ readings stored internally
- Communication: GSM/GPRS module transmits data daily to your server
- Protection: IP68 (fully submersible, ideal for flooded chambers)
- Sizes: DN50–DN300
Real Application: Rural Water Supply in East Africa
A water utility managing 40 rural boreholes across a 200 km radius needs flow data from each site but can't justify grid connection or solar for every one. The NT-VMF-BT installed at each borehole sends daily volume totals via GSM to a central dashboard. No site visits for data collection, no power infrastructure, no ongoing consumable costs.
Calibration
Same TÜRKAK-accredited calibration as our mains-powered meters. Same ±0.27% uncertainty. Same internationally-recognised certificate. The battery version compromises on nothing except power consumption.
